Environmental Benefits/Public Health Benefits

Climate change is increasing global average temperatures making extreme heat events more frequent and deadly. Extreme heat events in New York City are the leading weather-related killer. NYC Department of Health estimates an annual rate of 115 heat-related deaths, including by heat-stroke, and over 450 heat-related emergency room visits for heat exhaustion and dehydration. During the 2019 Corona virus pandemic, low-to-moderate income communities of color in the LES experienced high rates of COVID-19 morbidity. During lockdown, people were forced to spend unprecedented amounts of time indoors in their homes. Poor indoor air quality caused by the presence of indoor airborne toxins and irritants exacerbate symptoms of respiratory, airborne diseases like COVID-19 making people more vulnerable to the disease’s impacts including an increased incidence of mortality.

What is ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY?

Environmental literacy starts with a heightened awareness of our built and natural environments and how we inhabit them. It requires an understanding ofthe functions of urban systems beyond individuals perceptions of convenience or necessity. An accessible path of inquiry starts by examining how byproducts of our infrastructure, transportation, buildings, materials, processes, and products used in our homes emit toxins that harm our health and accelerate climate change.
